Camille Paré-Poirier and Geneviève Marois-Lefebvre: artists of the RBC fall residencies at the Maison d'Ariane

2022-09-26

Grand-Métis, September 21, 2022 - The International Garden Festival of the Reford Gardens welcomes, from September 5 to October 2, 2022, actress and playwright Camille Paré-Poirier and visual artist Geneviève Marois-Lefebvre, at the Maison d'Ariane in Métis-sur-Mer, as part of the RBC Residencies for emerging artists.

Camille Paré-Poirier is originally from Quebec City. She studied acting at the Cégep de Saint-Hyacinthe before moving to Montreal. Since 2016, she has been developing her practice through performance, documentaries and poetry. For her, these three tools of creation have in common their immense power of evocation, and allow in their own way to sublimate the daily life by approaching it with a new eye.

The purpose of her residency is to complete the stage adaptation of her very moving podcast Quelqu’une d’immortelle (https://transistor.media/balados/quelquune-dimmortelle), which is rooted in over fifty hours of recorded conversations with her grandmother Pauline. Titled Je viendrai moins souvent (I'll come less often), her play is a precious archive, spanning 2016 to 2021, of the evolution of a relationship between a grandmother and her granddaughter and the anticipation of an imminent and inevitable death. The play will feature two characters, Camille and Pauline: a young actress, who works in a restaurant waiting for something to happen, and her grandmother, who, in her room at the CHSLD, is waiting for nothing to happen. The play will be presented in Montreal, at the Jean-Claude-Germain Theatre of Today, from April 28 to May 13, 2023 (https://www.theatredaujourdhui.qc.ca/moinssouvent).

Geneviève Marois-Lefebvre is a visual artist who lives and works in Frelighsburg, in the Eastern Townships, as an educational and mediation officer at Adélard (https://www.adelard.org/). She holds a master's degree in visual and media arts from the Université du Québec à Montréal. Since then, she has developed a practice centred on the image, in relation to the question of effects and narrative. Depending on the project, her works take multiple forms, from installation to photo or video, to text and collage. She is particularly interested in the meeting zones between the real and the imagined; between the beautiful and the ugly.

As part of her residency, she hopes to take advantage of the exceptional flora of the Reford Gardens and the presence of raw clay on the banks of the river to create temporary sculptures. These sculptures will be composed of an accumulation of flower and leaf casts made from clay collected on the banks. The clay will be dried, but not fired. Fragile, brittle and water soluble, these creations will be destined to disappear, as they are subject to the elements. Their disappearance will be filmed and photographed in order to preserve the trace of their existence and the temporality of their destruction.

Residency outing

The two artists invite you to come and meet them during a residency outing on Sunday, September 25 at 2:30 p.m. at the Jardins de Métis (no reservation is required). Camille will unveil the fruits of her writing and archiving work, while Geneviève presents photos of her series of temporary sculptures in raw clay, which have been subjected to the variations of the tides and the vagaries of the weather.

RBC Emerging Artists

The RBC Residencies at Ariane House in Métis-sur-Mer are made possible through the support of the Royal Bank of Canada's RBC Emerging Artists Program. This program provides funding to organizations dedicated to supporting artists in various fields (visual arts, music, theatre, performing arts, literature and film) who are at the beginning of their career; are creating new work; demonstrate a commitment to devote more time to their art; are involved in the creative environment in which they evolve; devote at least 24 hours per week to the practice of their art; are financially committed to the practice of their art and seek to derive their primary income from their artistic activity; have little history of presentation, exhibitions or publication; identify themselves as emerging artists.
